Immunology is a biomedical science that studies the innate non-specific immune system and the adaptive or specific immune system. In response to disease or infection, the innate immune system provides a rapid, general, non-specific immune response, and if it is unsuccessful in destroying the pathogen, the adaptive immune system then provides a highly specific immune response to target the pathogen. The adaptive immune system is also responsible for the development and maintenance of memory cells, specifically T and B cells, which remember previous aggressors and provide quicker specific immune responses against re-offending pathogens.
