Apoptosis refers that genetic control of cells sre subject to the active and physiological process of death following their programming. It's involved in roles of gene in activation, expression, and regulation, and also has great effects on defense and immune response of organisms as well as potential therapeutic significance.
Apoptosis includes early, middle, and late phase. During early apoptosis, phosphatidylserine(PS) is exposed to the surface of cell membrane and can be detected by Annexin V apoptosis kits. During late apoptosis, DNA is broken, using TUNEL apoptosis kits.

TUNEL refers to TdT-mediated dUTP Nick-End Labeling.
During apoptosis, chromosomal DNA is broken, producing a large number of adhesive 3'-OH terminal. These exposed 3'-OH can link with fluorescence-labeled dUTP by the catalysis of TdT. Perform the detection to show features of apoptosis via fluorescence microscope or flow cytometer .
TUNEL is suitable for various samples, including cell samples(cell smears, cell slides, suspension cell) and tissue sample(paraffin and frozen section). So TUNEL is widely applied in apoptosis research.
