- Introductions
Balanced Salt Solution (BSS), also known as physiological solution, integrates the buffering capacity of a buffer, the isotonicity of physiological saline, and the nutrient supply characteristics of a culture medium. It functions to maintain osmotic pressure, stabilize pH, and provide basic nutrients, thereby meeting the fundamental survival and metabolic needs of tissues, organs, or cells in in vitro experiments. A small amount of phenol red is added to some balanced salt solutions to serve as a pH indicator, reflecting changes in the acidity or alkalinity of the solution.
DPBS, which stands for Dulbecco's Phosphate-Buffered Saline, is one of the commonly used balanced salt solutions in biochemical research. Its main components include NaCl, KCl, KH₂PO₄, Na₂HPO₄, and others. DPBS is categorized into two types based on the presence or absence of calcium and magnesium ions. Compared to conventional PBS, DPBS has a slightly lower phosphate content. DPBS is primarily used in embryology research, often serving as a rinse solution, cryopreservation solution, and culture medium for embryos. Additionally, components such as glucose and sodium pyruvate can be added to DPBS to better support the growth of cultures.
